چکیده

The possibility that genetically determined abnormalities in the monoamine oxidase of certain central nervous system aminergic neurones may play a part in the pathology of Huntington's chorea was investigated using human platelet monoamine oxidase. Significantly elevated monoamine oxidase activity was found in male patients compared to control subjects suggesting this may be a screening test for this disorder. Low monoamine oxidase activity was associated with a better clinical response to drugs.

Biochemical Markers for Huntington's Chorea

The uptake of dopamine (DA) by platelet rich plasma was assayed in II patients with Huntington's chorea (H. C). The results confirmed the previous observation that platelets from H.C. patients take up, at equilibrium, more dopamine than do platelets from normal control subjects. The mean difference was 50% higher at DA substrate concentrations of 0.11 mM. However, attempts to confirm the higher...

Low platelet monoamine oxidase activity in headache: no correlation with phenolsulphotransferase, succinate dehydrogenase, platelet preparation method or smoking.

Platelet monoamine oxidase activity in male migrainous and cluster headache patients was significantly lower than in male controls, confirming our previous study. The activity range showed a normal distribution and low mean values could not be attributed to a subgroup with particularly low activity. When Corash 's platelet preparation method was used, with its high platelet yield, specific enzy...

Platelet monoamine oxidase activity and headache.

Mean platelet monoamine oxidase activity was reduced compared with control values in groups of headache-free male (but not female) patients suffering from classical migraine and from tension headache. Mean activity in male cluster patients, headache free, both during acute and quiescent phases of their illness, was also notably reduced. Retesting some migraine subjects after up to four years, s...

An update on the identity crisis of monoamine oxidase: new and old evidence for the independence of MAO A and B.

The monoamine oxiclases (MAO; EC 1.4.1.4), named by Zeller in 1938, are widely distributed in the animal kingdom (Blaschko, 1974; Hall and Uruena, 1983) and oxidize many biogenic and xenobiotic amines in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues. Thirty five years ago, MAO drew the attention of psychiatrists and pharmacologists when MAO inhibitors were found to be therapeutically effect...

Absence of close linkage between benign hereditary chorea and the locus D4S10 (probe G8).

A genetic linkage study between benign hereditary chorea and the locus D4S10 using the DNA probe G8 has shown two recombinations in five small families. There were negative lod scores at recombination fractions that show conclusive evidence of linkage in 16 larger British Huntington's disease families. We suggest that although benign hereditary chorea and Huntington's disease may have some clin...
